Half a Century of Healing: The CHASL Story

Since 1975, we have moved from a small collective of faith-based clinics to a national health authority providing 35% of Sierra Leone's healthcare services.

1975

The Foundation of Unity

The Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL) was established as an umbrella body to unify fragmented faith-based health services. The goal was simple: to act corporately to foster Christian love through coordinated, high-quality medical service.

1980s – 1990s

Rural Expansion

While urban centers saw growth, CHASL prioritized the "hard-to-reach" areas. The network expanded into 13 of the 16 districts, becoming the sole provider of care in regions where public facilities were often non-existent.

2014 – 2016

Frontline Crisis Response

During the Ebola outbreak, CHASL’s deep community roots proved vital. Our facilities served as the backbone of the faith-based response, implementing community-based health financing and human resource management to keep the health system from collapsing.

2021

Clinical Standardization

CHASL led the rollout of the National Standard Treatment Guidelines and the Essential Medicines List. This milestone ensured that a patient at a rural CHASL clinic received the same high standard of care as one in a major city hospital.

2025

Supply Chain Maturity

The Medicines Supply Unit (MSU) underwent a maturity assessment from the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network through Difam, solidifying its role as a professionalized, high-volume procurement and distribution hub for essential pharmaceuticals nationwide.

2025 – 2026

Strategic Priorities and Investment Focus

CHASL is advancing high-impact interventions in pandemic preparedness, NCDs, and RMNCAH to strengthen Sierra Leone’s health system. Through partnerships with Bread for the World, Action Medeor, African Clear Sight Partnership (Presbyopia), DIFAM, and ACHAP (HIV/TB Lifeline), we expand access to essential services. Our integrated model strengthens service delivery, workforce capacity, and supply chains across a nationwide network of faith-based facilities. Investing in CHASL delivers equitable healthcare, restores sight, saves lives, and builds resilient health systems for the most vulnerable.
