Delivering Hope: Strengthening Maternal Healthcare Across Sierra Leone

The Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone (CHASL) is a dedicated network of faith-based health facilities and partners on a mission to bring quality, compassionate healthcare to every corner of our nation. Together with our local communities and international partners, we are proving how unstoppable we are when we unite to strengthen our health systems.

Accessible healthcare saves lives, especially for mothers and newborns. A well-equipped local clinic means pregnant women no longer have to travel dangerous distances while in labor. Proper prenatal care and trained midwives mean more safe deliveries, ensuring that mothers survive and babies get the healthiest possible start in life.

Before the CHASL member facility in her district received updated medical supplies and staff training, Aminata often feared for her pregnancy, knowing the nearest major hospital was hours away. Today, she receives regular prenatal check-ups right in her community, and she just safely delivered a healthy baby girl. “I feel safe knowing the nurses have what they need to care for us,” Aminata shared.

How do we tackle healthcare disparities?

We work directly with our 43 member facilities, local health experts, and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to find the best sustainable solutions for each community. Whether it’s supplying essential, life-saving drugs through our Medicines Supply Unit (MSU), conducting clinical capacity-building workshops for nurses, or upgrading rural facility infrastructure. Alongside direct medical care, our partners coordinate community health education, establishing trust and ensuring that high-quality care keeps flowing to the families who need it most for years to come.
